Is There a Book in My Business?

Although every person may have a book in them, that is not true of every business.  To assess the potential of your business or your work as the subject of a book, ask yourself and honestly answer these questions:
  1. Does our company have a record of success (and some failures)?
  2. Is there something proprietary, special, or unique about what we do?   Is the potential for something proprietary or unique here?
  3. Are we working in a “hot” area? Is there a “wow factor” in our work?  Are we tuned into any current but durable trend?
  4. Is the business at least five years old?
  5. Do we have written materials, such as marketing literature, seminars, speeches, or white papers, that explain what we do?
  6. Are we willing to share our ideas and experiences openly with the public?
  7. Will some clients or customers act as case histories or speak for attribution about our work?
  8. Do I have a clear idea of what a reader would get from spending 250 pages with me?

If you answered “yes” to most of these questions, there may well be a book in your business.

If you answered "no" to most questions (and still want to write a book), you probably need more experience in your current business, more creative approaches to your work, or more actual material for a book, such as original research or richer case histories.
